Die Arbeiten der japanischen Künstlerin Nanami Hori gehören zu den eigenwilligste malerischen Äußerungen innerhalb ihrer Generation. Stark beeinflusst von visuellen Subkulturen Japans, bezieht sie sich ihre Arbeit weniger auf deren visuelle Ästhetik, sondern auf die darunter liegende soziale und psychologische Dimension dieser visuellen Phänomene. Schließlich bilden Manga und Anime eine umfangreiche Resonanz in Fan-Art aus, in der Stile, Figuren oder Motive imitiert, abgewandelt oder erweitert werden. In einer zweiten Stufe bildet diese Äußerungen vernakulärer Kreativität einen Aufhänger für soziale Interaktion zwischen oft einander ansonsten unbekannten Personen, da diese distinkte Form von Fan-Art geteilt, getauscht, aber auch gemeinsam erstellt wird. Vor allem in der temporalen und logischen Brüchigkeit infolge dieser interpersonellen Verzerrung werden die Sujets aus Manga und Anime für Horis Malerei wieder interessant, da sich so diverse Spleens und Unterwanderungen in den Motiven festgesetzt haben. Diese sehr eigene, kulturspezifische Form von Appropriation eröffnet Horis Malerei konzeptionell und kompositorisch besondere Rahmenbedingungen, welche zuletzt verstärkt von einem Repertoire gestischer Malerei ergänzt werden.

Nanami Hori (*1995) lebt und arbeitet in Tokio. Sie hatte Ausstellungen bei XYZ Collective, Tokyo und Bel Ami, Los Angeles sowie zahlreiche Ausstellungsbeteiligungen. Left Skin ist ihre erste institutionelle Einzelausstellung.

The works of the Japanese artist Nanami Hori are among the most idiosyncratic pictorial expressions within her generation. Strongly influenced by Japanese visual subcultures, her work relates less to their visual aesthetics than to the underlying social and psychological dimensions of these visual phenomena. After all, manga and anime form an extensive resonance in fan art, in which styles, characters or motifs are imitated, modified or expanded. In a second stage, these expressions of vernacular creativity form a hook for social interaction between people who are often otherwise unknown to each other, as this distinct form of fan art is shared, exchanged, but also created together. It is above all in the temporal and logical fragility resulting from this interpersonal distortion that the subjects from manga and anime become interesting again for Hori's painting, as various spleens and infiltrations have thus become established in the motifs. This very unique, culture-specific form of appropriation opens up a special conceptual and compositional framework for Hori's painting, which has recently been increasingly supplemented by a repertoire of gestural painting.

Nanami Hori (*1995) lives and works in Tokyo. She has had exhibitions at XYZ Collective, Tokyo and Bel Ami, Los Angeles as well as numerous exhibition participations. Left Skin is her first institutional solo exhibition.
